In recent journal entries, i've made reference to the fact that my spiritual beliefs share commonalities with Satanism. More specificially, though, the commonalities are less with Anton LeVay's Satanism than with theistic Satanism. One theistic Satanist whose writings i admire is Diane Vera, the force behind the TheisticSatanism.com Web site. In this article, for example, Vera helps address the stereotypes - sometimes sadly accurate - about Satanists by poking fun at what she calls the 'Brat Brigade': the people, usually male, who have overdosed on Geburah-type energy, see existence as being summarised in the phrase "Nature, red in tooth and claw"1, and believe that the weak should be trampled on by the strong. (Personally, i've most often come across members of the Brat Brigade in politics, manifesting as proponents of the far-left, the far-right, or temper-tantrum anarchism.) Overall, i've found her writings to be a measured and thought-provoking description of theistic Satanist beliefs.

And whilst i'm on the topic of spiritual beliefs, i was amused to come across an article on Faith Based Programming. Although it's satire, it reminded me of the old saying that divinity helps those who help themselves . . . .

1. The phrase is taken from a verse of Tennyson's In Memorium A.H.H.:
Who trusted God was love indeed
And love Creation's final law -
Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek'd against his creed
which i feel demonstrates a more balanced view. The poem actually ends with
What hope of answer, or redress? Behind the veil, behind the veil
which for me carries Qabalistic connotations . . . .
