Positivity
2007-01-26 17:30i'm far from perfect. i have made, and, continue to make, many mistakes over the course of my life. And i'm very conscious of this; i'm usually my own harshest critic. Not least because i usually set higher standards for myself than i do for other people. (To quote a programming maxim: "Be liberal in what you accept, and strict in what you produce".) So i thought it might be time to write a bit of a list of positive things about myself:
- i'm usually very good at 'translating' between two peoples' idiolects (except when one of those idiolects is my own): i can often tell when two people are communicating at cross-purposes, and help them understand where they're both coming from.
- i'll often speak up when someone is treating someone else inappropriately, or showing a lack of basic civility or etiquette, or having double standards re. themselves vs. others.
- It's very rare that i can't find something positive to say about someone, even when the person in question is someone i dislike overall, or have had a falling-out with.
- i'm comfortable admitting when i'm wrong, and comfortable saying "Sorry" when it's warranted. In both cases, i'm comfortable doing so in public if necessary. This is an integral part of trying to take responsibility for my actions.
- i'm very good at respecting people's privacy (although sometimes it means that i'm perhaps more reserved than necessary in social situations).
- i have a strong sense of duty and sharing a workload; i would rather take extra work on my shoulders than ask someone else to do more than their fair share. Further, i don't regard myself as being 'above' menial work.
- i'm constantly seeking to improve myself: to be more understanding, more forgiving, more helpful, more supportive, more loving; to learn more about how the world works; to be someone who leaves the world in a better condition than that in which i found it. :-)
