In a recent post to her LJ,
porcineflight wrote about a campaign to make today "Blog Anti-Torture Speakout Day". So here are at least some of the reasons i'm opposed to torture:
- It basically doesn't work, despite what addicts of fear-porn like "24" may claim. But don't take my word for it: "Torture Has a Long History ... of Not Working", "Dear Senators - CIA Letter on Torture", "The Torture Myth", "Retired FBI agent: Waterboarding produced 'crap' information from detainee".
- The "ticking time bomb" argument in favour of torture is hardly sound: Torture and the ticking time bomb".
- Torture can, and does, rebound on the torturing society in various ways: "It's our cage too".
- Even if torturing the complicit was acceptable, torturing the innocent most certainly is not: "Confessions of a torturer: The story of Army interrogator Tony Lagouranis".
