New Google group, Melbourne mad - please repost!
Mental health care should be appropriate and evidence based with the patient the absolute focus and delivered in the right place, at the right time and where capacity to pay has no impact.

We are a group of mentally ill people, their friends, family, partners and allies who are based around melbourne australia who look to support each other to find affordable accessible patient centred informed consent based mental health treatment and to advocate for this treatment to become more widely available.

We recognise that race, socio-economic status, sex, gender expression and disability affect access to mental health services for some people. We are commited to challenging the mental health system to support all people in need of mental health services.

We support evidence based medicine and services a key component of treatment and care for mental ill people, including those modalities not necessarily part of main-stream approaches but which, nonetheless are supported by evidence.

Sounds like a fabulous group!

It's funny while reading about the group and considering the name of it I can't help thinking about my recent experiences.

I had back surgery and still have weakness and numbness in a leg and foot it makes me limp / have a strange gait and it is hard to get around. Recently to help me walk more steadily and more heal and toe I have started to use a stick *shudder* when walking outside (physio thought it was a good idea and thanks greenglowgirl for the lend till I get my fancy colourful stick in the mail).

Before I got the stick people would just give me funny looks and not have any consideration, getting in the way even though I can't walk fast; and stumbling every now and then combined with my weird gait I think made people wonder if I was pissed or something (considering some of the looks I occasionally got).

With the walking stick... huge difference in people's reactions... they make room for me to get past, are generally more considerate... but maybe a bit more pitying which I don't like - though hopefully my groovy stick (when I get it - I hope it arrives today *fingers crossed*) will help reduce that part of it.

Anyhow, it has been a rather interesting social experiment lol

Evidence based - wouldn't it be great if you could get rid of the dominance of 12-step programs for treatment of drug and alcohol issues (often linked with mental health issues but treated separately... or not at all)
