First DreamWidth post!

i won't be directly posting to my LiveJournal any more, although i will crosspost there from here.

i've written before about how i'm not particularly inclined towards jumping on the social networking service de année. So my move to DW was based on a number of factors.

Push reasons:
  • LiveJournal is feeling decreasingly community-oriented and increasingly commercially-oriented. This is reflected in things such as ads being displayed to people viewing my LJ entries.

  • LiveJournal seems to regularly have 'incidents' which reduce my confidence in the service. The latest such incident, involving potential changes to the gender one can list on one's profile, was close to my heart. Although LJ has claimed that there was an error and misunderstanding, the fact that i'm not sure i can take them at their word rings alarm bells.

Pull reasons:
  • DreamWidth is making 'the right noises', e.g. in their Guiding Principles and Diversity Statement.

  • Although it is true that, as they say in the Diversity Statement, [p]latitudes are cheap, the fact that i'm getting positive impressions about DW from the circles that i move in suggests that DW aren't merely engaging in platitudes.

  • i like the idea of supporting, and possibly developing for, a FOSS project in which the majority of developers are women.

If you're reading this on LiveJournal, i encourage you to consider blogging on DreamWidth. :-)
