Alternatives

i can't relate to most so-called 'alternative' porn i've encountered. It seems to be populated by the sort of 'trendy' looks which i associate with people who are too hip to interact with the likes of me. And it makes me ask: What's alternative about it? Tattoos, piercings, coloured hair? i don't (yet) have tattoos, but i do have several body piercings, and colour my hair regularly, and i don't regard these things as a particularly significant axis on which to measure 'alternativeness'.

Consequently, though it may seem odd, i can find myself more able to enjoy non-'alternative' porn because at least it's not making any putative claim to be significantly different. "Significantly different" porn to me would, at the very least, and amongst other things, include bodies that the BMI would call 'obese', and that have been in existence for more than 40 years. That, to me, would be a more truly 'alternative' porn.

On the whole, I agree with you about the "alternative" not being very alternative. I tend to think in situations like these that we're suffering from selection bias, though; certainly I know my social group self-selects for people to whom tattoos, piercings and such are normalised (as are things like an awareness of polyamory and queer-friendliness), but there are still plenty of people out there for whom they're quite extreme. For a reminder of just how left of centre I tend to be, the comment sections on The Age and The Herald Sun work fairly well, though they do tend to have a deleterious effect on my appetite... *wry smile*

I would be happy to find more porn out there that celebrated the "significantly different," as you describe it, without fetishising it. Unfortunately, the choice often seems to be between the two...

Still, the Internet is huge. It's gotta exist somewhere, right? *grin*
