I love the fact you post things like this sometimes...Keeps me informed...I don't read up on news and I don't watch tv much to know about such things...It's nice to see it on here :-) Thanx
Well, I'm not going to comment on this particular argument you're having as I don't know enough about CAAH. But I do think that large sections of gay and lesbian communities are very keen to chase respectability from society at large and consequently, tend to pursue a pretty conservative agenda, same sex marriage being a case in point. Often, this sidelines or even attacks less conservative groups or people - eg. BDSM, poly, bi, trans, sluts, hookers, etc, etc. So I do think the point you made is absolutely correct. Same sex marriage and legal rights of partners of any persuasion should be pursued, but that fight is just a symptom of a much deeper malady - fear and hatred of any and all sorts of difference (and for good measure, envy and hatred of subversive pleasure).
i very much agree with you re. the GL communities and respectability. On the one hand, i feel it's quite a reasonable approach to take, because after all, who doesn't want a life in which one is respected by one's society? But on the other hand, it also tends to validate "mainstream values", and further marginalise those (such as myself) who don't fit in with and/or agree with those "mainstream values". To me, it smacks of "Don't hurt us, we're normal! Take those weirdos over there!" :-/
You're so right. My ex-partner had all sorts of shit from lesbian audiences in particular. She introduced/introduces herself as a queer, submissive, sex-positive feminist poet. They just wanted her to be a nice lesbian. Sigh.
