sacred_harlot earlier today. i'm still very much a novice in this regard; and although i'm interested in tarot for its own sake, i also want to use it to develop my intuition, since i'm such an intellectually-oriented person. Ironically, though, i'm getting the feeling that one has to intellectually know the cards and what they represent before one can really start using one's intuition to get a feeling about a spread. If that makes sense. :-) At the moment, i'm trying to interpret individual cards based of my knowledge of where they fit on the Tree of Life1, and then comparing my interpretation with Cannon Reed's booklet of suggested interpretations. It's a rather slow process, and means that i spend much more time on the details, rather than the 'big picture', of the spread; but i regard it as analagous as having to learn at least part of a language's vocabulary before being able to start making sense of sentences in that language. Time will tell whether that's the correct approach. :-)
1. At least in terms of Ellen Cannon Reed's correspondences, which in turn are mostly the same as the Golden Dawn's correspondences.

Date: 2006-03-24 09:00 (UTC)have you read rachel pollack's "78 degrees of wisdom"? its one of the few tarot books i find useful. it gives an intellectual understanding while really encouraging the kind of headspace one needs to break free from the intellectual and sink into the intuitive.
also, orryelle made his own tarot pack which i find incredibly rich in imagery. we have a copy here. its got a whole bunch of gender varient images included in it. it breaks away from heteronormative assumptions without loosing any of the multilayered meanings contained in the trad cards.
of course having gender varient images is not enough to be drawn to ta pack. everyone's mind reacts differently to images so ou gotta go with waht feels right even if it isn't PC.

Date: 2006-03-24 11:18 (UTC)i've seen some of Orrellye's stuff, and i have mixed reactions to it - some of it i really like, some of it much less so. i actually quite like Cannon Reed's pack (i quite consciously chose it), but yes, at some point in the future i would like to work with other packs with the hope of getting fresh perspectives. i'd probably start with the Rider-Waite-Smith pack, though: despite the fact that i really don't like its aesthetics, i do appreciate its "let's see if we can't squeeze more symbolism in" approach and historical importance.
