Parable

When i was in grade 3, myself and my fellow pupils used to have to copy out a sentence from the blackboard each morning. It was a way of getting us to develop our handwriting.

One particular morning, i dutifully copied out the provided sentence, and took it up to my teacher, as i always did, for her approval. She didn't approve. She sent me back to do it again, saying something along the lines of "Spacing, remember your spacing."

So i went back and did it again, this time slightly increasing the spacing between the letters and/or the words. i took it back up to the teacher for her approval. "No. Correct your spacing."

So i went back and did it again, again increasing the spacing. i took it back up to the teacher for her approval. She again rejected it: "Spacing, boy, spacing!" she said in exasperation.

So i went back and did it again, increasing the spacing even further. When my teacher looked at it, she decided she'd had enough:

"There's too much spacing!!!"

When you're told that you're doing something wrong, it's probably a good idea to find out what other people's idea of the doing that thing right is . . . .
