9/11

So the mass media are bombarding us with reminders of "the day that changed the world forever". Although i imagine that sensationalism-based ratings are the primary motivation for this, such a media campaign also forms an important propaganda component of the "War on Terror", which is being used to justify the continuing assaults on civil liberties in Australia, Britain and the US. In the US, though, research has shown that "9/11 not a signpost in most North Americans' lives"; and even staid publications such as Foreign Policy find it difficult to believe that the post-9/11 world is that much different from the pre-9/11 world, as indicated in their articles "The Day Nothing much Changed" and Think Again: 9/11.

Amongst all this, Federal ALP Member for Melbourne Ports, Michael Danby, has attacked Channel 10 for broadcasting a program which discusses a conspiracy theory about 9/11. Apparently Danby is unaware of the fact that dozens of academics think that 9/11 may have been an 'inside job', and is also unaware of the various pieces of the 9/11 puzzle that don't fit. Meanwhile, Channel 7 is broadcasting The Path to 9/11 without criticism from Danby, despite the US Senate Democratic leadership threatening Disney with legal and legislative sanctions and American Airlines considering legal action against ABC, not least because of the program's misrepresentations of the findings of the 9/11 commission.

In any event, i find it difficult to disagree with the notion that the mass media's obsession with recounting the events of 9/11 is effectively doing Al Qaeda's work for them.
