The wonderfully caring Australian government has decided to allocate Federal funds to allow chaplains in public schools:

The $90 million program will be voluntary and allow schools to appoint chaplains or share one with another school.

Workplace Relations Minister, Kevin Andrews, has told channel Ten there is a need for students to be given guidance.

Of course, there's no way such guidance could be given by someone who isn't a senior religious figure, is there? And let's not worry about the appropriateness of having to choose a chaplain from one particular religious denomination, who might not (and i imagine, probably won't) represent the spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) of all the students at a given school.

The faith-based funding weed continues to grow . . . .

Because the school system couldn't have used that 90mil for I don't know, teachers? textbooks? free lunch(not kidding, it can really make the difference if all the kids get a least one good meal a day)?

Yes, more teachers and/or free lunches would indeed be better ideas; but don't get me started on my feelings about textbooks . . . .

This bloke (http://venividiblogi.blogspot.com/2006/10/uncanny-x-men.html) has probably identified the cause of the whole move.

Family First supports cross-media changes, PM announces chaplains in schools. Anyone keen to draw a linkage between these two events? As ever, VVB supports a good conspiracy theory until it's disproven, life is more fun this way.

The chaplains will be government-approved. This constrains choice by schools (inconsistent with government mantra, no whiff of hypocrisy as these people can do no wrong). No Scientologists (good), no Falun Gong (eh?).
