Double standards
2006-02-07 18:28i've really been appreciating many of the rages being posted to the
feminist_rage and
queer_rage communities. One such rage was a rage about prescriptivist behaviours in the trans* communities. It always upsets me to watch one harassed minority to complain, correctly, about the poor treatment they face, and then themselves engage in similarly negative behaviour against other minorities. In my experience, queer assimilationists in particular are prone to doing this: witness, for example, their claim that the reason queers aren't accepted is because of so-called 'extreme' queers who aren't 'normal' enough for heteronormative society to deal with. Victim-blaming much? :-/

Date: 2006-02-07 22:18 (UTC)I find that some people within "marginalised communities" be that due to race, sexuality, and now I am hearing gender identity; can be much worse in terms of their marginalising of other members of said community. This in my experience feels much worse than from non members of said community - somehow I expect better from people who themselves have experienced prejudice and discrimination!
Which brought me to a realisation that each and every community is merely a microcosm of the wider community and unfortunately my expectations have had to be revised accordingly, that makes me very :-((.
As a survivor of a plethora of child abuse incidents, there is absolutely no way I could meter out the same to others, as I clearly remember how it felt when I was in that position - so why can't they? Go figure!!!

*sad nod*
