Today i finally got the vasectomy i've been wanting to have for years. The whole experience was all very positive - friendly and professional staff, minimal discomfort afterwards. The op was performed under general anaesthetic, which was an entirely new experience for me: i'm not even sure i've ever had a local, let alone a general, anaesthetic, so going under and then suddenly being in the recovery room was a bit weird. Albeit not as weird as the experience of being wheeled on a trolley to the theatre (though when i was being wheeled back from the theatre, i was still too groggy to care :-) ).
So it's done, yay!

Date: 2007-01-25 01:31 (UTC)Yes, this issue is often a big bone of contention between partners. In my particular instance, i'm fortunate enough to have one partner who is very definite on not wanting to have biological kids herself, and another who already has children and who respects my decision to not want to become a biological parent herself.
So if i may ask, what's the situation like for you in this regard at the moment?

Date: 2007-01-24 22:16 (UTC)i have a couple of friends who have had vasectomies, and when they got it done they got the symbol that vets put in the ears of animals who get 'fixed' tattooed in their ears. which i thought was funny and very cool. if i ever get my tubes tied (which is a distinct possibility) i'm going to get the tattoo done.

Date: 2007-01-25 02:48 (UTC)Thanks. As i indicated, i've actually been wanting to get it done for ages, but doctors had previously been unhappy about giving me a referral, for the usual reasons. Whereas nowadays i'm able to say "One of my partners definitely doesn't want biological kids, one of my partners already has biological kids with whom i have somewhat of a parental relationship, i have health problems which means i feel it wouldn't be responsible to bring more kids into the world for me to care for [muttered: and hey, i'm 32, so you can't pull that 'You're too young to make such a decision' thing on me]".
i actually think far more tube-tying/cutting operations would be performed if doctors would actually let people do so. But i guess they face the prospect of litigation from people who don't have a clue about actions and consequences, and who would instead try to put the responsibility for their infertility back on the doctors in question . . . .
*laugh* Indeed! i might look into that myself. :-)

Date: 2007-01-26 04:17 (UTC)I remember my dad got one when I was little, it didn't seem like a major op. I hope the healing goes quickly.
Maybe I'll try and photograph the insides of one of my cats ears for you! The tattoo seems like a cool idea.

*sad nod* i've often found this to be the case (e.g. this (http://hierodule.livejournal.com/31406.html)).
Thanks, seems to be going well. :-)
Heh, that would be great, thanks! :-D
